How Norway Made me Fall in Love with Winter

Becky from The Owlet in Tromsø standing beside a giant snow pile, demonstrating essential winter clothing for Norway winter travel.

Hey Owlets,

For so many people, the nights drawing in and the temperature dropping is met with a feeling of dread. From as early as the end of August, I hear people talking about how they're not looking forward to the darker nights and shorter days. Honestly, I get it - the world just feels more alive in summer. There are festivals, weddings and social events every weekend, not to mention just feeling the sun on your skin is good for our mental health.

I think for a lot of people, the colder days and darker nights bring a feeling of loneliness, isolation, and maybe even a touch of cabin fever. I try to make the most of everyday, but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't felt the same.

Until I went to Northern Norway in winter.

Review: The Drifters Girl at Bristol Hippodrome

Hey Owlets,

This week we were lucky enough to be invited back to the Bristol Hippodrome to watch The Drifters Girl. Featuring all of the biggest hits, you'd be forgiven for assuming that the performance simply tells the tale of The Drifters but you'd be wrong. While The Drifters story is told along the way, the woman propelling them to stardom is the hero of this show.

How To Shop the Black Friday Sales on a Budget

How to find the best black friday deals uk

Hey Owlets,

There’s Christmas music playing in the supermarket (earlier again this year!), Black Friday is here, there’s pressure to buy Christmas gifts and apparently 2020 is the gift that keeps on giving, because having navigated multiple lockdowns and a global health crisis, we’re now faced with the challenge of heating our homes, looking after our loved ones and enjoying the festive season with next to no budget (I write this as I’m in pyjamas and a wearable blanket, under a duvet for warmth). The pressure to spend more is huge at this time of year, and with the festive season looming a lot of people are turning to the Black Friday sales to try and make their money stretch further.

The issue, as I’m sure most of you are aware, is that Black Friday is just one giant marketing tactic and a ploy to get you to part ways with your hard-earned cash. So before you dive head-first into the sales, here are a few tips to help you shop without breaking the bank.

My Christmas Wishlist

*Contains Affiliate Links*

Hey Owlets,

2020 has thrown a lot our way, and personally it's made life as a blogger pretty difficult. If you follow me on Instagram you'll already know but, in case you missed it, I announced I wouldn't be doing my usual gift guide. There's a lot of different reasons for this, but it wasn't an easy decision and I've really missed writing about my favourite products. I've decided to get in the spirit of 2020 and do things differently. I can't afford to buy all of the products to review in my gift guide, so instead I thought it might be interesting for you to see what's on my wish list. Hopefully if you're wondering what to get someone you care about, or you're looking to treat yourself after a hard year, then this might provide some inspiration. You're going to have to bear with me for the first few items - I did say this was an ultimate wish list, so while there are some more affordable items on here, there's also a few things that I can't necessarily afford but would absolutely love!!

Getting Organised: National Stationery Week

How To Get and Stay Organised At Work Productivity Tips National Stationery Week
*contains sponsored content*
Hey Owlets,

If you’ve been following me for a while then you’ll know that I have a bit of an unhealthy obsession with stationery - for me I need to feel like my life is organised before I actually do anything (I know, that makes no sense but I promise it works). So this is actually my perfect week - it’s national stationery week! Every day has a different theme and I tend to have stationery but not know what to do with it, so I wanted to share a couple of tips I’ve found this week.

The Christmas Tag: Blogmas 2017

Hey Owlets,

HAPPY BLOGMAS!!!

If you don't know what that is, it's where a few brave (or mad) bloggers write a blog post every day of the festive season; no way am I going to manage that but I do have a lot of Christmas content planned. I decided today, to mark the first day that Dad won't tell me off for playing Christmas music, I thought I'd give you a bit of a preview of what I'm planning, as well as completing a Christmas tag blog post as a bit of an intro!

10 Things to Do While I'm 21

One Year Targets Turning 21 Birthday Goals London Regents Park

Hey Owlets!

I can't believe I'm saying this but as you're reading this, I'm out with my parents celebrating my TWENTY FIRST BIRTHDAY. Fetch the dentures, I'm officially old. I've been pretty lucky growing up - I joined a radio station, started my blog and the last few years in particular have been amazing. However, there's always room for improvement so when someone suggested doing a bucket list for my 21st birthday I jumped at the idea.

Welcome To 2017: Goals and Wishes

Plus size blogger holding a handbag

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!!!

I hope that you've enjoyed a lovely festive season - I can't believe how quick it's gone! If you saw my Year in Review post you will already know that 2016 was actually a pretty good year for me despite the fact that the latest social media trend seems to be to hate on the last year. I realise I talked a little bit about my goals in the previous post where Abbey tagged me, but I want to talk about it in more detail.

Since 2016 was so good for me, I wanted to share some of my goals and wishes for 2017. These are things that would be absolute dreams for me to do, as well as what I want to challenge myself to do in the next year.

Before we get to that, I have a bit of news. This morning (as I'm writing) I was woken up by my friend ringing to congratulate me.... for being a 2017 UK BLOG AWARDS FINALIST!!!! I absolutely cannot believe I've been shortlisted- your votes have meant everything to me so for that I have to say a huge thank you. Now let's get down to business.

This Time Next Year

Hello Again!

Okay I admit it, this is going to be a tag post. I very rarely do these kind of tag posts because I like my blog to be a bit original so that you're not reading different versions of the same content from different creators, but when Abbey tagged me in this post, I loved the idea of it, especially because of the idea to update it in a year's time.

IT'S CHRISTMAS!!

Good morning!

I'll keep this post brief, as I'm sure by this point you're on at least your second glass of bubbly and have already eaten too much despite the fact that it's only breakfast time.

I don't really have anything to say in this post, other than one very important message:

I hope you have the best Christmas Day. Enjoy your time with family. Enjoy the food, the drinks, the company and, of course, the presents (I can't wait to see on Twitter what you all got!).

I can't believe it's come to the end of our Christmassy content already, but don't worry as I have lots of posts to guide you into the New Year, and some incredibly exciting things to follow in 2017.

There's going to be some exciting collaborations, lots more travelling, body confidence tips, vlogs, fashion, recipes and who only knows what else.

Thank you for making my first year as a blogger so amazing; I can't wait to see what my next year as The Owlet will bring.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, God Bless and any other festive greetings you can think of.

Love and Festive Feathers,

20 Things I've Learnt at 20

So I've seen this post floating round the Blogosphere a lot recently and I admit I've gotten a little carried away, so if you've written one I've probably already read it so I figured it's about time I write my own. So here we go, 20 things I've learnt over the last 20 years.

1. Do What You Love

This is so important and I cannot stress this enough. Growing up, I spent so long doing things I didn't really like doing because I thought I should, or because the frenemies that I clung to through secondary school were doing the same thing. Equally there's things I've wanted to do, but didn't because it wasn't the cool thing to do. I realised at about 15 that it's not important to do what everyone else is doing if it's not something that you want.

2. Don't Let Anyone Say You Can't

This kind of relates to the previous one, but so many times I've tried my hand at something and I've been told I can't do it, I'm not good enough, I'm too fat, I'm too old/young. There's always someone that's going to come up with a reason why you can't do something, but listening to them is the worst thing you could do. Instead, I like to see it as a challenge. If someone told me I can't do something, I'm determined to prove them wrong. My teachers told me I wasn't smart enough to go to university, and now I'm in my third year and doing well.

3. Kindness Gets You Everything

This is probably one of the harder lessons that I've had to learn. When you're younger, it's easy to get frustrated when people are blocking you from what you want to do, but at some point you'll be annoyed to learn that the phrase "You'll catch more  flies with honey than with vinegar" is true. Always be kind, because you never know when you'll need that person in the future. If someone annoys you, or makes things difficult, try to remain courteous, and if someone asks for your help give it where you can. You never know when you'll need help and if someone remembers that you were there for them when they needed it, they'll most likely want to return the favour.

4. You Don't Ask, You Don't Get

This is one of the biggest life lessons for me and something I've always been told growing up is that if you don't ask for something, no one will ever know you want it. The worst that someone can say is no so you might as well try- you've got nothing to lose!

5. Keep To Your Word

Nobody likes a time waster - especially if someone has given their time up for you. If you tell someone you're going to do something then do it, even if it means extra work for you. If people know that they can rely on you, then they're more likely to be willing to help you in the long run.

6. You Won't Gain Anything by Waiting For it to Arrive

In case you hadn't noticed by now, I'm very driven. One thing I was never told but have learnt through experience, is that nothing will happen as long as you sit around waiting for it. If you look at anyone who has gotten anywhere with their life, it's because they've spent a lot of time working hard for it. If you don't make yourself known by working at what you want to do, no one will know you want to do it.

7. Family Comes First

Friends are always important, but when it comes to family they should always come first, regardless of what else you have going on in your life at the time.

8. Not All Family is Related

This is sort of related to the previous post, but sometimes your family isn't just those who you're related to by birth. You can't always choose your family, but you can make additions to it. Sometimes, friends become so close that they become relatives too.

9. Friends are for a Reason, a Season or a Lifetime

I heard this from another blogger rather than from a family member, but I think it's such an amazing quote. I've had a few friends that I've tried to held on to when I shouldn't for fear of being without anyone. Sometimes people come into your life to help you through something, but aren't meant to be a friend for life, and that's completely okay.

10. Friends Don't Have To Be in Your Pocket

You shouldn't neglect your friends, but it doesn't mean you need to speak to each other 24/7. Sometimes you can go months without speaking to someone, but if they're true friends, they'll be there for you when you need them and you can talk to them like you never left.

11.  Don't Waste Time on Someone Who Won't Give you Theirs

I think this is so important - it's all too easy to chase after someone that you consider a friend, or drop everything to help them when they ask because you want to be a good person, but if they aren't there for you when you need them then it's not worth wasting your time.

12. If They're Not in Your Life, Their Opinion Doesn't Matter

As a blogger you get to do things that a lot of people would never get the opportunity to do, and this sparks a lot of jealousy and unfortunately a lot of hate. The first thing any blogger will tell you is that you need a thick skin, but at times that's easier said than done and it can be easier to take on a  comment rather than ignore the negativity. It's easy to forget, but if someone isn't part of your daily life then their opinion really shouldn't matter.

13. Don't Stay Where You Aren't Happy

This applies to work and to life in general. You only get one life, and there's no point spending it being unhappy. If there's something that you can change to make yourself happier then that's something you should absolutely do, even if it may cause you a few problems in the short term.

14. Travel Whenever You Can

With my blog and working as a photographer, I've been very lucky to have the opportunity to travel the country. It's such an amazing experience to see other cities and visit places that you've never been before, even if it's only in the same country that you've grown up in. If you can save up the money and keep some time spare, I would absolutely recommend it, even if it's only for a day trip.

15. Take Every Opportunity

As a blogger, I'm lucky to be offered more experiences than others but if you're ever given the chance to do something different, you should always take it, whether it's something that you personally have been invited to do, or something that was an open call for members of the public. New experiences will stand you in good stead for other aspects of your life, and getting to experience new things is just as enjoyable as it is helpful to you.

16. Function Over Fashion

When I was younger rI used to go out for the day in a dress and a pair of heels, then spend the day limping down the street with my feet covered in blisters, or freeze because I didn't have a coat to match my outfit. While style is still massive to me, sometimes you have to forgo the fashionable outfit in favour of being comfortable, and by doing this you're always going to be more productive.

17. Always Bring a Coat
I can't stress this enough. You know when you were growing up and you'd constantly be harassed by family as you walked out the door for leaving without a coat? Well annoyingly, they're actually right. Wherever you go always bring a coat, whether that's a thick warm jacket in winter or a waterproof parka, because it's less effort to carry it and not need it, than spend the day dodging rain and possibly making yourself ill because you didn't come prepared. I know it's annoying, but just listen to them.

18. Don't Stress If You Can't Change It
It's natural to worry about bumps in the road, but if you can't do anything about them then you're wasting your time worrying about it. Worrying doesn't solve anything, so if you can change the situation then try to, but if you can't then try to calm down and think about things logically. If you make yourself ill, you're no use to anyone.

19.  Work Hard

I feel like this one is pretty self explanatory but work hard in whatever you do and you will succeed.

20. Keep it Simple

Do what you love, work hard and don't overcomplicate anything that doesn't need it.

Hopefully this post has been helpful for you, whether you're younger and still trying to figure things out or if you're older and just getting there. If you have any advice that I've not mentioned, please let me know in the comments below.

How To Survive Uni

Hey Owlets,

So you're starting another year of education, and you've probably said the same thing that thousands of students have said time and time again that's turned into an empty promise.

"I'm going to knuckle down this year"

"I'm going to study more"

"Grades before partying"

Have you actually kept up with the promise you made yourself? No, I didn't think so.

I didn't in my first year of uni either, and it meant that I had A LOT of making up to do to get my 1st. I like to think that in my third year of uni I sort of know what I'm doing these days so if I can give you a few tips to make the next few months a little easier, then I'll give it a go.

My lecturer keeps saying that the last year of uni is only 8 months. That's 8 months between you, the grade you need, a job you like and going out a little less, binge watching Netflix a little less and turning up to classes is a short term sacrifice for long term gain. However, I know how easy it is to procrastinate and think "I'll just watch that last episode of Gossip Girl" so here's my advice.

Write a To-Do List

Writing a to-do list really helps me. Seeing exactly what I have to do and breaking down the big tasks into smaller tasks motivates me, because I can see exactly what I need to do, how much I have to do and a way to complete it in smaller chunks. Also, if you break the bigger tasks down, then they'll feel less daunting and you can do one or two of the small tasks at a time so it feels easier and like you're accomplishing more.

Make the Most of Uni Events

I can't stress this enough. It's easy to see optional seminars and talks from guest lecturers and think " I don't need to go", especially if you're travelling in every day but they wouldn't put these lectures on if they weren't going to be helpful to you, and making the effort to go to as many as you can will really help when it comes to doing your written work.

Take Notes

That leads me on to your next point- take notes. Even if the lecturer tells you that the presentation will be online later, still make notes. Lecturers often say a lot more in lectures than is written on the slide, and you'll be kicking yourself for not writing it down when you look at something that isn't on the powerpoint.

I didn't want to overload you with tips- I actually have a lot more suggestions from things that have helped me, so if you found this useful and would like a part two, just let me know. Also, if there's anything I've not mentioned here, comment below. (I have a hand in soon so I need all the help I can get!)

A Summer Barbecue

Hello Owlets!

Summer is amazing. You can go outside without piling on the layers, you have more free time now you've finished school or uni for the year, and the rain gets warmer! Seriously though - the British summer may be a laughing stock to pretty much everyone, but sometimes we do actually get a sunny day and it's important not to waste it. And yes, I'm well aware that there is no sunshine in any of my pictures, but we're British so not raining is good enough.

(thank you Stacey for modelling!)

A few weeks ago I was sat at home blogging when I got a random phone call telling me to meet my friends at the shops in an hour. I got there, and somewhere between putting on my makeup and walking to the shops it was decided that we'd have a barbecue. We didn't really have anything other than some salad and potato salad I'd prepared so we went shopping. We got a bag of chicken, sausages and burgers from Iceland for £3 which was amazing for something like this  - they're definitely worth a look if you're planing a get together. We bought some plates (they're football plates but we were too lazy to go to another shop!), some snacks and sauce and finally two disposable barbecues from PoundWorld. It's really worth looking around if you want to do something like this - I couldn't believe that you could get a disposable BBQ for £1!

We headed to a field near our home as we didn't want to cause a nuisance but wanted a picnic. We sat there and spent the afternoon cooking barbecue food, relaxing, snacking and listening to music. On a hot day it's all too tempting to sit inside in your air-conditioned lounge and watch Netflix (and I'm definitely guilty of this) but getting out into the fresh air, spending time with your friends and doing something different will always make you feel better than scrolling through Instagram.

The one issue with our plan was the actual cooking. Okay some of them were a bit *crisp* but we got the hang of it in the end and had a really lovely meal while sitting in the not-rain having a good old catch up!

So, maybe PoundWorld barbecues aren't the best invention that life has to offer and it would be easier to cook in an oven, but it was a great afternoon. If you see the sun come out while you're hiding behind your phone screen then use it to call a friend, grab a coffee, go shopping, take a walk or burn a few burgers on a pound-shop barbecue. Whatever you do, make the most of the summer because it won't be around forever!

What's your favourite thing to do during summer time? Let me know in the comments below.

Why Are Mermaids So Massive?

You've seen the shell bags and repetitive "25 things every mermaid needs" lists on Buzzfeed, your Instagram is full of shells and the shops are full of shiny things, but where the hell did the sudden obsession with mermaids come from? That question has been driving me mad for quite a while so I decided to investigate.

In 2014 the Daily Mail ran an article about the yet-to-be-a-trend "mermaid fitness classes". This is where regular land-dwellers can wriggle into a scuba mermaid tail and try not to drown while working out and (attempt to) look majestic while doing so. However, it wasn't until the Huffington Post caught onto it in Summer 2015 that the internet blew up and the whole world went mermaid mad.

Seriously - what would we do without Buzzfeed and the Huff to tell us what we should and shouldn't like?

From there just watch as the internet and all your favourite shopping outlets blew up, producing everything and anything mermaid related. Even Christian jumped on the bandwagon with a mermaidy pair of loubs, just in case you've got a spare £1500 burning a hole in your pocket.

(P.S. Everything will be linked down below in case you can't live without something on here. Sorry, not sorry.)

One trend that's appeared on the side of all the mermaid related madness is that anything iridescent is cool (not that it's ever not been cool in my book, but that's just me!). If you're wanting a more subtle nod to your mer-folk obsession, the internet has everything from clutch bags to coffee cups covered in the shiny-scale like appearance and, if you have over £3000 spare, even Chanel jumped on the holographic bandwagon. You're welcome.

So if you've been a closet Disney fan your entire adult life, rejoice. Your childhood is officially trendy again! Along with the entire 90s, chokers, dodgy grey lipstick.... well at least the mermaid trend is pretty.

Hairspray and Famous People

So you may have gathered by now that I'm a little bit of a theatre nerd. I always love attending, and would always rather watch a performance than a film. There is something magical about the theatre that can't be captured in camera- the atmosphere of the hall.

This week I went back to the Bristol Hippodrome to see Hairspray. If you've seen the film you'll already know what this is about, but for the benefit of those who have been deprived, I'll explain.

The story is based in 1962, where huge amounts of prejudice remain. Tracy Turnblad is an overweight teenager that dreams of dancing on the Corny Colin Show along side the teen idols that are regularly featured. She skips school to attend an open audition, but is laughed at and not allowed to audition, in the same way that a young black girl is treated. With white superiority still the norm, the show has a "negro day" once a month in which black dancers are allowed to join. Tracy meets the stars of Negro Day who help her to get on the show. Long story short she becomes famous and tries to change the stereotype.

So it's a rather far fetched fairytale but none the less a heart warming story, and the music makes it such a good performance. The dancers and the choreography itself is amazing, and the music is "sing-along-able" (if that wasn't a word, I've decided it is now!).
Claire Sweeney, Dad and I

If the amazing acting and choreography wasn't enough, at the end Claire Sweeney (playing the mother of Tracy's rival) came off the stage and jumped on dad next to me (yes, it is possible to get a stitch from laughing too much, I did then!).

Tony Maudsley (literally the friendliest person ever!)
Throughout the whole show, the one distraction was the star studded cast. Tony Maudsley (who I'm reliably informed, played a homosexual hairdresser in Benidorm ???), Peter Duncan (from Blue Peter? Also the Encyclopaedia of Dad), and my favourite Layton Williams. If you've ever watched Bad Education and you remember the gay guy who was amazing at dancing, that's him.
Layton Williams!!!!
With such a famous cast, we decided to wait around after the show to meet them. Mum and Dad were busy obsessing over Tony and Claire, and I froze just long enough to meet Layton Williams, have a cuddle and an autograph.

They were all so nice and did such a good show. If Hairspray is touring anywhere near you, drop everything and get tickets because believe me, it's a show you won't regret seeing!
