How To Survive Uni

Hey Owlets,

So you're starting another year of education, and you've probably said the same thing that thousands of students have said time and time again that's turned into an empty promise.

"I'm going to knuckle down this year"

"I'm going to study more"

"Grades before partying"

Have you actually kept up with the promise you made yourself? No, I didn't think so.

I didn't in my first year of uni either, and it meant that I had A LOT of making up to do to get my 1st. I like to think that in my third year of uni I sort of know what I'm doing these days so if I can give you a few tips to make the next few months a little easier, then I'll give it a go.

My lecturer keeps saying that the last year of uni is only 8 months. That's 8 months between you, the grade you need, a job you like and going out a little less, binge watching Netflix a little less and turning up to classes is a short term sacrifice for long term gain. However, I know how easy it is to procrastinate and think "I'll just watch that last episode of Gossip Girl" so here's my advice.

Write a To-Do List

Writing a to-do list really helps me. Seeing exactly what I have to do and breaking down the big tasks into smaller tasks motivates me, because I can see exactly what I need to do, how much I have to do and a way to complete it in smaller chunks. Also, if you break the bigger tasks down, then they'll feel less daunting and you can do one or two of the small tasks at a time so it feels easier and like you're accomplishing more.

Make the Most of Uni Events

I can't stress this enough. It's easy to see optional seminars and talks from guest lecturers and think " I don't need to go", especially if you're travelling in every day but they wouldn't put these lectures on if they weren't going to be helpful to you, and making the effort to go to as many as you can will really help when it comes to doing your written work.

Take Notes

That leads me on to your next point- take notes. Even if the lecturer tells you that the presentation will be online later, still make notes. Lecturers often say a lot more in lectures than is written on the slide, and you'll be kicking yourself for not writing it down when you look at something that isn't on the powerpoint.

I didn't want to overload you with tips- I actually have a lot more suggestions from things that have helped me, so if you found this useful and would like a part two, just let me know. Also, if there's anything I've not mentioned here, comment below. (I have a hand in soon so I need all the help I can get!)
