Follow Me To: The Photography Show

Plus size blogger at NEC Birmingham

Hey Owlets,

Can you guess where I've been from the picture? Last week Adam and I took our usual trip up to Birmingham for The Photography Show and I thought it might be good to show you around. And yes, I did feel like an idiot while Adam took that photo.

One thing I always love about the show is that there is so much to photograph. The organisers put out different displays for people to use as props. This year they had a motorbike which wasn't great as the background was just a grey panel, but they'd set up an entire display of flowers. I don't usually photograph the prop area but since last year I've become a blogger, and I can't pass up the opportunity for stock photos. Even though I don't usually photograph them, they're always really crowded and I've seen some really great photos come from these prop areas.

The Photography Show is the place to find out the latest trends but I feel like this year we'd already heard about all of them. Fuji Instax was EVERYWHERE. As were drones and virtual reality. I was really hoping that we would see something new that I hadn't yet heard about in terms of technology but that wasn't the case.

However, I do have to say the one thing that I was really impressed with is a new site called "Phlow". It's completely free and was created because photographers got frustrated with spending so much time working on their social media accounts. It works like social media and a search engine. You put your photos into that and then people can search and find photographers or images that match their needs. The fact that this was free is amazing. If you're a blogger or have a small business I would highly recommend you check it out.

The other massive trend was that everyone wanted to take your photo. As a blogger I'm getting more used to having my picture taken, but it seems weird that so many people wanted to photograph photographers. There were photo booths everywhere, and while I didn't really understand it we did take full advantage of it. There's a lot of other photos from last week, but I thought we'd just pick the one where I don't look like a complete idiot (I actually love this set).

Overall I was actually pretty disappointed with the Photography Show this year. Normally there's so many talks I want to go to, I love all the stands and run out of time. This year there was no one I wanted to see speak, all of the stands seemed to be for wedding or studio based photographers and we left after just under four hours. We did still enjoy it- just maybe it's changing and isn't for my kind of photography as much as it used to be.

Let me know if you went, what did you think? We also put together a mini guide for where to go if you only have a small amount of time in Birmingham, as I know a lot of people change trains there and have a lot of time to wait so I'm excited for you to read that.

Speak soon!
