Hey guys!
My family and I have a strange tradition of going to the seaside in the middle of winter. After the festive season and New Year is out the way, it's easier to feel a bit run down by eating rich food and being cooped up inside all the time, so we decide to combat it by trying not to freeze by the sea.
We decided to go to Weston Super Mare as that's the closest to us so we can get there and back in a day. Having had a wander around the shops we went on the pier which is where family tradition really kicks in.
We start with a walk along the pier up to the arcade. My family aren't usually the fastest moving so it was about 4pm and the sun was already setting by the time we got onto the seafront. I particularly love going to the seaside at this time of year because it's so peaceful. The tourists are gone, and instead are replaced with local families and dog walkers on the beach. The sun is low in the sky so the setting is always beautiful.
Once we've admired the view and got some fresh air in our lungs, there is one more tradition in the Ward family household which is to spend a good hour winning tickets while mum stands at the two penny slots. After an hour or so, the pier was closing so we spent our tickets on the latest edition to our family (Peter the bear) and went for dinner.
I think the seaside is actually more beautiful once the sun sets. It reminds me of when I was younger and used to go for walks late at night when we went to Devon on holiday. There's something really photogenic about the seaside after hours.
This is probably one of my favourite winter traditions. Even though it was -2 at the time, it's good to get out of the house and beat the New Year slump.
