What I Learnt Offline

Hey Owlets.

Sometimes, life overcomes us a bit and we decide we need a break. Most flock to somewhere hot and sunny - I didn't. You've probably seen my post from a few days ago where I decided that I was thoroughly fed up with internet. As a blogger, it's sometimes hard to separate your online and offline lives, especially as you're sort of expected to always be online. Well, I decided to break that convention, and had three days away from the internet.

In this day an age it's pretty much impossible to go without internet completely, so I limited myself. Blog things were banned - no Twitter or Facebook. I still used Snapchat and WhatsApp as that's mainly how I keep in touch with my close friends and family, and of course I still used YouTube and Netflix, but I didn't check my own channel. However, all my tweets, Facebook and Instagram posts were scheduled and you may have noticed that I wasn't replying to comments for a few days.

So, what did I learn?

1. Not everything on the internet matters.

Okay, at the time that not-so-friendly comment that anonymous user number 2554 has left you might be upsetting but they're just a few characters on a computer screen with no attachment to a human being and really aren't important. Are you happy with yourself? Because if you are then those comments really shouldn't have any influence.

2. Life is to be enjoyed at the time, not just after.

With the advent of so many different social media sites, it feels like a constant pull to need to update all of them all of the time. You won't die if you save that Instagrammable photograph to upload later, and that funny tweet you've thought of will probably still be funny in an hour's time. Constantly photographing and needing to capture the best images to share on social media stops you from simply enjoying the moment. When I wasn't thinking about social media and capturing the best content, I relaxed and enjoyed what I was doing much more than I otherwise would.

3. There are more hours in a day!

This seems like an obvious one, but being sans internet frees up an awful lot of time. When you're not stopping to reply to your tweets and comment on the latest pointless "get through this post without spending £X" article on Buzzfeed, you can get so much more done and you can concentrate on what you're doing.

What do I think overall?

Okay, well I'll be honest. I actually got internet withdrawal symptoms. I felt the need to keep picking up my phone even though I'd turned off notifications so I had nothing to check. However, after the first half a day I started to get into the swing of things. I'm never going to stop using the internet - obviously not. I love my blog and I have some of the most lovely readers - I know that if I post something I'll get some amazingly supportive comments. However, there is life outside of the internet and taking a breather gives you the head space to realise that the anonymous person that has nothing better to do than tear other people down has no bearing on how you live your life.

Take a break - even if it's just for an hour. What do you think- could you do it? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. I really love this post! It's so important to take a step back from the online world and actually experience what's going on around us, and your second point is so accurate! We spend too much time worrying about 'proving' to others that we have suuuch a fun life, instead of actually having one. Thanks for posting this! :)
