UniBox: Review

UniBox subscription box review

Hey Owlets!

I have a review for you today of something I've been excited to receive for quite a while. I feel like pretty much every subscription box going has been created by now, so I was surprised to actually see a new concept appear.

UniBox is a subscription box aimed at helping students to survive uni, even if you're in halls and living off baked beans. The box contains healthy food, wellbeing products, things to improve your  room and help you study. They call themselves "the monthly student care package" which I think is pretty accurate, going by how my friends (don't) take care of themselves.

The box retails for £24.99 and ships monthly around the academic calendar, although this gets cheaper if you pay in advance. Being soppy, one of the things I absolutely love is that every box contains a hand written note to the recipient, which I think goes really well with the idea of a care package.

In January's box I received:

Spare Fruit Apple Crisps

Puriton Protein Shakes

Tea Pigs Popcorn Tea

Bubble Off Room Spray

Nom Nom Honeycomb Chocolate

UniBox Cardholder

Voost Multivitamins

£20 gift card to Teech

The box also comes with a mini magazine each month as well as an explanation of everything in the box. I love the magazine- this month it has an article about setting goals, and two student-friendly recipes (which don't involve beans- yay!) from a blogger based at Newcastle Uni, as well as a mini challenge on the back (this month it's showing you how to use the box to create a projector).

I absolutely love the concept of this - I think it's good that they focus on vitamins to help your mind be sharp to study, help you to eat healthier instead of reaching for unhealthy snacks, and something to make your room nicer (room spray).

I think the way this box is set out is great - it looks at all aspects of uni life, not just cooking or supporting studies. The hand written note really does make it feel like a care package, rather than "just another subscription box".

While I like the box concept, there are a few issues. The first is that a lot of the box is food based, so while the Room Spray is suitable for vegans it could be an issue if you have certain dietary restrictions (I know a lot of students are doing Veganuary), but in their Q&A on the website they said they'll be working on this soon.

The second is the Teech voucher. Teech is an app which connects students with mentors at top universities who will answer science and maths questions. Considering this box is aimed at all students, not just those who study specific courses, I think in a lot of cases this voucher will go to waste (not mine - enter to win a £20 Teech voucher below!). However, when I signed up for my first box I was asked what course I study, so I'm guessing that with time they will tailor the box to suit different kinds of students (more creative or more academic subjects).

On first glance, I think the price is a bit steep for what you actually receive, because as a student I already have to scrape together money out of nowhere, without an extra £25 a month on top. However, I think that for the concept of this box being a gift, the price is a lot more justified, and from the perspective of concerned relatives, the fact that everything in the box is natural and healthy is a huge selling point.

Overall, I love UniBox's concept of sending a care package each month, and while as a student it's not something that I personally could afford, it's unlikely that you'd buy yourself a care package, so the idea of a relative sending them this box each month is perfect. Yes there are a few issues but this is the first box that they have ever released, and I think now they've shown they can do it we'll see the creases ironed out and the box will get even better as time goes on.

Let me know what you think in the comments below - if you go to buy the box use the code "UNIBOX15" for 15% off (I don't get any commission - just trying to be helpful!)

Love and Feathers,

P.S. The lovely people at UniBox sent me this for review but as ever, that never affects my opinion on a product; I am always 100% honest.
