Bath is a city brimming with heritage. From the beautiful sandstone buildings to the Roman remains and everything in between, the city is the ideal place for any history or architecture buff to spend a weekend. Bath has a secret though - it can transform in the blink of an eye to perfectly embody each changing season. Famous for its city-wide Christmas Market Bath can sometimes be forgotten in the summer in favour of the UK’s seaside towns, but the city is full of hidden gems just waiting to be explored when the sun shines. Here are a few places that you need to take another look at during the warmer months to experience the best that Bath has to offer in summer.

The Roman Baths

If you grew up living anywhere remotely near Bath then your first experience of the Roman Baths was probably on a school trip, but if you’ve not been back since then it’s definitely worth another look! Opening until 10pm between 20th July and 31st August, you can watch the sunset from the wrap around balcony and explore the familiar attraction by the golden glow of torchlight. You can even grab a glass of Prosecco from the pop up bar that will be open each evening.

Prior Park on the outskirts of Bath is a perfect place to spend a summer day in South West UK

Prior Park Landscape Garden

Designed in part by renowned landscape gardener Capability Brown and located just a short drive from Bath city centre, Prior Park is home to the Instagram-famous stone bridge. The Palladian Bridge is one of only four worldwide, but that’s not all the park has to offer. Home to serene lakes, meandering tree-lined paths and a tranquil summerhouse, Prior Park is the perfect place to spend a peaceful summer day. The National Trust property also has a packed calendar of events taking place this summer. Visit between 15th and 26th July to watch archeologists continue to uncover the Bason of Water or bring the kids to the Summer of Play event, running from 20th July - 3rd September.

American Museum & Gardens

It wouldn’t be a British Summer without a little rain, but that doesn’t have to dampen your plans. This summer the American Museum & Gardens is home the American Road Trip exhibition. The exhibition presents the stories of those who have travelled along the iconic Route 66, and encourages visitors to get involved. Expect travel games, theatrical sets and a whole host of Americana memorabilia. You can even get up close to a 1958 Harley Davidson motorcycle an immersive exhibition that will make you forget the rain you’ve had to take shelter from. Should the sun come out you have 125 acres of luscious gardens to explore, either in your own time or on one of the museum’s 45 minute tours.

The gardens at The Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath City Centre

The Royal Crescent Hotel

This luxurious hotel set on one of Bath’s most photographed streets has a huge amount to offer, even if you’re not staying the night. Walk through the hotel to find a huge secret garden tucked away behind the building’s facade. Dine on the terrace, continue your post-treatment relaxation in the Taittinger Spa Garden or enjoy afternoon tea in the walled garden. If you’re looking to treat yourself, The Royal Crescent Hotel’s gardens are a truly special place to spend an afternoon soaking up the sunshine.

Follow the City Skyline Trail

The Bath City Skyline walk is a 3 mile circular walk with breathtaking views. This rural haven is located just a stone’s throw from Bath City Centre and it’s the perfect place to get some exercise on a sunny morning. Sham Castle is one of the highlights on the trail; called this because it’s just the front wall and turrets, no one is entirely sure why anyone wanted just the front wall building, but it’s really interesting to visit and offers one of the best vantage points of the whole route. If you’re looking for something a little less strenuous, pack a picnic, park on North Road and take a short walk up to watch the sunset from the castle.

Bath City Centre and Pultney Bridge seen from the far side of the River Avon

There’s lots to explore, both in Bath City Centre and in the surrounding areas. Heading just a little outside of the city, you’ll find beautiful country house hotels, eco farms, stunning National Trust properties and popular attractions like Longleat Safari Park. If you’re coming to the city for the first time give yourself at least three days to see everything, then head just a little further West to explore Bristol in the same trip. I have a guide to summer in Bristol to get you started.
