My Dream Office

Hey Owlets,

It’s no secret that working from home has been rough for a lot of people. I must admit that a year ago I was feeling a little too relaxed having boasted that I’m used to working from home and that I can work anywhere. Well after over a year of working from the same place, it’s fair to say I’m about as done with this as the rest of you. When we first moved into our little one-bed home I was more than happy to have my desk in the living room - it looked pretty and made the most of the sunshine coming in through the window. With blogging full time I’ve quickly outgrown it and now my thoughts have turned to buying a home in the future I’ve already started dreaming of my perfect setup, so I thought it would be fun to share my future dream office with you in case you’re already in the process of creating your ideal workspace at home.

Separate Office

This has become a big deal for me over the last year. When we moved into our home I loved the idea of having my office in the lounge to make the most of the light and beautiful space. However, over the last year I’ve found myself longing to separate my work from relaxing space. When Jack comes home from work he wants to sit in the lounge and relax, but having spent the entire day in the lounge I’m desperate to be in any other room and it really annoys me that I no longer appreciate the beautiful space we have. In my future home there’s absolutely no doubt that I need a separate space so I can enjoy relaxing in the lounge again.

Light

Light is the entire reason that I put my desk in the lounge. Personally, I find that I get a lot of motivation from the weather - if I look outside and see sunshine then I’m way more likely to have a productive day. When we look for our future home I would need a space that gets a lot of light - having a dingy spare bedroom as my office isn’t an option. My ideal situation would be having a garden office as well as a desk in the house so I can really make the most of the natural light on nicer days. If I’m honest the only time I wouldn’t want to work in a garden room is if it’s torrential rain, because I’d need a towel by the time I got to my desk!

Creativity

Creativity is another thing that’s really important to me, and it’s something I’ve done to some extent with my current desk setup but I’m a little limited as being in the lounge means we both have to look at my desk every day and I don’t want guests to visit and see my messy thought process. If I’m able to have my own room then I would want lots of bright colours, pictures on the walls and things to make me smile. Happy memories are my biggest source of inspiration so seeing a photo collage above my desk would be bound to inspire me to write something new.

Storage

I know I’ve talked about all of the fun design elements so far, but we need to be practical. With my job I have several lights, multiple cameras, a laptop and more clothes than the average person needs. With my current setup I have three drawers in my desk and that’s it. As pretty as my desk is it’s just not practical, and my work equipment has spilled over into just about every storage space in our flat. Ideally if we owned our home I would have built in storage to allow me to keep everything in one place so it’s easier to find and way more organised.

Hopefully these suggestions have given you some ideas if you’re currently planning your dream office. I know that working from home has been hard on a lot of people - I admit that I didn’t expect to be someone that struggled but I’m desperate to head out to a cafe with my laptop for a change of scenery. I can’t wait to have the space to spread out and leave paper everywhere without feeling guilty about messing up our lounge. Messy I know, but at least I’m honest!
