Protect Your Skin from the Sun with This Smart Advice

Even when it's not particularly sunny, you need to think about how to protect your skin from the sun. Sun damage can make your skin age faster, and it can also increase your risk of skin cancer. While many of us might desire a bronze tan, limiting your exposure to the sun is the best thing to do for your health. You can do a few different things to protect your skin from the sun, both when you're outside on a sunny day and on a more day-to-day basis too. It doesn't need to be hot for the sun to affect you, so pay attention to these tips.

Cover Up When the Sun Is Out

Covering up is one of the best ways to protect your skin from the sun. It's also very important for children, especially for babies younger than six months old. It's easy to make sure you're well-covered, even when it's hot outside. If the temperature is high, you can cover up and stay as cool as possible by choosing light and breathable layers. It's also a good idea to wear a hat, which will protect your scalp and provide shade for your face. Some hats will help to protect your neck too.

Wear Sunscreen

Even if you've covered up, it's still a good idea to wear sunscreen. You can't cover up everywhere, so be sure to have sunscreen with an adequate SPF. Ideally, you should use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and it should protect against both UVA and UVB rays. These products will offer you the best protection against skin cancer, as well as preventing sunburn. You should apply it at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside to make sure it's effective and reapply it every two hours. If you're swimming or sweating a lot, you should reapply every hour.

Use Makeup with SPF

If you're looking for something that gives you everyday protection from the sun, makeup with a sun protection factor is excellent. You can wear a mineral foundation that makes you look glowing, while also preventing the sun's rays from damaging your skin. It's the perfect way to get daily sun protection for your face, and you don't have to remember to use any other products. You can just wear your foundation like usual. SPF lip balms and other products are also available to help protect your skin.

Limit Your Time in the Sun

It might be tempting to sunbathe on a warm day when the sun is out. Getting a tan when you're on holiday shows everyone you've been somewhere nice. But if you want to protect your skin, it's best not to spend too long in the sun. If you are in the sun for a long time, taking the steps above is the best thing to do, rather than spend your time tanning. When you can find shade (or create it yourself) it's better than being directly in the sun.

Protecting your skin from the sun keeps it looking beautiful, prevents premature ageing, and helps to prevent skin cancer too, so make sure you're thinking about sun protection.
