What I Looked for in My Home

Hey Owlets,

If you’ve been following me for a few months you’ll know that I moved into my own home with my boyfriend this Summer. Obviously it was really exciting, but for several reasons I was incredibly stressed out. We were looking for our home at a time when everyone was looking to move and houses were going off the market before we could even look at them. On top of that, with working from home I wanted to move somewhere that made me really happy rather than just choosing any house, because I knew I would be spending a lot of time at home.

When choosing our home, the biggest thing for me was finding somewhere with a lot of natural light. I thrive off of sunshine and being in light spaces; I find that the second Winter rolls around and the days start getting shorter I lose any motivation and really struggle to find inspiration for writing articles. Having some sense of outside space was also really important for my mental health. We couldn’t actually find anywhere with a garden, so instead we tried to find somewhere in the perfect location so I was close enough to areas that were great for a walk. Whenever I’m having a bad day I like to pack up my laptop and get outside for some fresh air and exercise.

We found somewhere that matched all of our needs but there are still some things I would love to change if we owned our own home.

First of all, the kitchen drives us mad. One of the things that we always love doing together is cooking. When we chose our home we sacrificed the kitchen because everything else was so perfect, but I do wish we could’ve had a bigger kitchen. We tend to batch cook for the week and by the time we’ve finished there isn’t a single inch of work surface available. I’ll be first to admit that we’re not the tidiest people when we’re cooking, but we just don’t have enough work surfaces. We made a temporary fix by buying a butcher’s block, but it’s still a massive pain when we’re baking.

I also desperately wanted some outside space. Having access to fresh air and plenty of sunlight is really important to me. We have big patio doors in our lounge which I love because they let in a lot of light and it makes your lounge feel like it's outdoors when I have all the doors open in the summer, but it's just not the same as having some proper outdoor space. My dream would be to have a small garden or a balcony - in my mind I have it decorated with a table and chairs for somewhere to have coffee in the morning or do some work, loads of plants and a hammock to relax after a hard day!

The next change I would love to make is to introduce more light into our home. Our bathroom doesn’t have a window in which would be fine if it was a second bathroom, but it feels a little claustrophobic. It’s really dark and doesn’t necessarily make me feel very relaxed when I want to have a spa evening. Even though we’re limited with the changes we can make here I still like to look at what I would do if we were able to, or for inspiration if we buy somewhere in the future. My personal style is modern, light and bright with lots of pops of colour. If we moved into a house I would love to swap out wooden balustrades for glass. I found a company who’s imagery is beautiful and it makes me a little sad that we can’t change our home - in case you’re looking you can find the right glass balustrades for your home here.

Having spoken about all of the changes I would choose to make to my home makes me feel like I sound a little ungrateful. I love our home, but I also love to dream about what we would do if we owned it. The location of our home is absolutely perfect. I also love the sense of space we have, even though it’s only one bedroom. Our lounge is huge, and has big windows all along one wall so it’s really light. I’ve also been able to split the lounge into several different “zones”, and having so many different uses for one room makes it feel a lot bigger. I have two small sofas in an L-shape around a coffee table with a TV in the corner, which keeps the area that we relax in separate from the rest of the room. We also have a dining table in one corner and my desk by the windows - totally selfish, but I spend the most time at home so wanted my desk to be in a place that would make me feel inspired.

Despite talking about the changes that I would love to make to our home, I’m so happy here. We got so lucky with finding this place, and I still wake up every day feeling thankful that I’m able to walk into the lounge, sit at my desk and stare out the window while I procrastinate (well at least I’m honest!).
