Okay, it's really no secret that I am obsessed with three things: cameras, owls and anything vintage. But what if you could combine all three into one thing? And I don't mean an owl in a wiggle dress perched on a camera, but a vintage fair that has owl things, cameras and more vintage dresses than you can shake a stick at (and a chick- don't ask, I don't know either).
Lou Lou's vintage fair is an event that tours the country, bringing the past to all those that are convinced they were born into the wrong generation, and yesterday it came to Bristol and I was lucky enough to be allowed in with my camera to document the event.
They basically sell everything from prints of scared looking girls and cats with moustaches (yes, I saw one of those) to little chicks and a parrot on a lamp, because that's normal right?
The vintage fair is one of my favourite events to photograph because in a way it's really easy. As an event photographer, its rare but sometimes you will go to photograph an event and there is so little happening and so little organisation that it's pretty much impossible to make it look interesting. Lou Lou's is the complete opposite of this. Everywhere you look there is something a little bit mad, and it's really well organised so you can wander around the various parts of the fair you want to see, like the home section, without getting stuck into the fashion if that's not your thing.
Also, I don't know what this is, but I was pretty sure it needed to come home with me (it didn't, boo!). The only issue with the vintage fair is that while a lot of the stalls are affordable, only a few of the fashion stalls are. Where you can get a dress online for between £20 and £40, I saw a lot of stalls selling dresses between £50 and £70 which means unless you knew in advance and had been saving up to go, you're probably about to leave empty handed. Also, a lot of the stalls don't take card and the nearest cash point is through the barriers and underneath platform three at Temple Meads. This is fine if again, you know this before coming, but about half way through the day if you ask to go through the barriers to get cash, the guards begin to get a little snarky because they've heard that a good few hundred times already during their shift.
This time, compared to all the others I've attended I felt both pleased and disappointed simultaneously. It's great that the fair has gotten so popular, but they'd tried to cram as many stalls in as possible so it was a bit cramped. However, they must have looked at who applied rather than letting it go to first come, first served, as there was still a great variety of stalls, and despite the number of people that attended, it wasn't so busy that it was difficult to see everything.
Each hour, on the hour, they have a band that play for about 20 minutes. It was the same band all day and it would've been nice to see a few different people performing, but obviously money is always going to be an issue with that. However, Just 3 Harmony Trio were amazing and had a wide variety of songs so it wasn't like they were singing the same set every hour.
And because I'm organised here's a lovely little clip of them, in which I drop a present I bought for Adam in front of the lens (classy, aren't I?!).
If the music, fashion and homewares isn't enough, they also serve tea and cakes in a little cafe at the end, and you can get your hair and makeup done by the loveliest team of girls (who always let me peak in their makeup boxes to see what products they're using- thank you girls!!!) in pretty much any decade you ask for.
And finally. I did mention the gorgeous dresses didn't I? Well here you are! I purposely didn't get any cash out before I went to the event, for the exact reason that I would come away bankrupt (I'm smart sometimes!).
Thank you for having me there to annoy everyone with my camera. I had a brilliant day as always, and can't wait for the next one (somewhere around 23rd April, but check on Facebook to be sure).
Love as always,
The Owlet 💜
