July In Pictures

SS Great Britain Bristol Rooftop View

Hey Owlets,

I can't believe it's that time of month again already. I know they say that the days go quicker as you get older, but I'm sure I blinked and two months have gone past. Maybe it's because I'm busy, but I've been struggling to keep up with my Month in Pictures posts, and with my blog in general. There's just never enough time to write. Anyway, on with July - this month I seem to have done a lot of different things and just forgotten to take photos, so apologies if this month's post is a bit thin on the ground.

Keynsham Music Festival Duck Race

We start off our month with a BSR event - we've been much quieter this year as we didn't have the volunteers, but that's made me look forward to them more than it just being hard work. 1st July was the day of Keynsham Music Festival, which is always a nice relaxing one (apart from the power going out half way through). It's Keynsham's answer to Bradley Stoke Community Festival so there's stalls to shop at, games for kids and music on the stage all day. My highlight was the duck race - they let the ducks go at the top and the first one to the bottom wins. Although the most amusing part of the whole race was watching the "duck catchers" walking down to clean up behind them.

This month was definitely the month of me saying "I forgot to take photos again" on a daily basis. On 4th July I FINALLY got to meet up with one of my friends after not seeing her for around three months. I'm sure being an adult is being free on Monday when your friend is off on Tuesday, so it takes an age to actually arrange to meet up. We did are usual which was nothing - we see each other so little now that we end up sitting in a coffee shop for at least 4 hours,  ordering multiple coffees and setting the world to rights.

8th July was a mini "moving in party" for Nan. She moved house at the end of last month so we went over for lunch in her garden in the sunshine, and went to explore her new house. Considering her old house was where I grew up, I surprisingly really like this one, and it suits Nan perfectly. One of the things I've loved recently is all the time I've been able to spend outside with all the great weather; it's fair to say I'm not in the camp of people wishing for the heatwave to go away.

I don't have a photo from the next few days, but I can promise you I have never spent so much time in a mall in one week. I somehow managed to break my glasses while I was at Nan's house and spent the next two days hanging around Vision Express when they first of all got my prescription wrong, then the next day when they fixed them. In fairness I love them now, but it was definitely stressful.

Bradley Stoke Radio Community Event Bristol

On 10th July we had one of our annual events; the local choir put on a performance twice a year, and BSR usually broadcasts it. The concert is hosted in my old school so it's really weird to go back, but it's good fun because you get to see the parts of the school that were always out of bounds when you were a student. This year Dad and I did a show from the sound booth, and it was awesome getting to watch the show from backstage (well, upstairs backstage), although it may have had something to do with the aircon.

Christmas in July Festival London The Snowman

On 12th July I was back in London - I feel like I haven't travelled a lot this month and I'm starting to go a bit stir crazy so it was nice to be out of Bristol for a while. You may be wondering why I'm cuddling a snowman in July which is a fair question. Every year there's a press event called Christmas in July where you get to see all of the trends and new products that will be launching for Christmas. Traditional print media usually write their core content three months in advance, meaning they need to write their content in August to be ready for November - I'm nowhere near that organised but it is good fun getting to celebrate Christmas in 30ยบ heat.

Bradley Stoke Radio Community Event Proms in the Park

15th July saw a first for Bradley Stoke - Proms in the Park (or first night of the proms if you're one of those people that religiously watches it on TV every year). Granted, this was on somewhat of a smaller scale than the BBC version, but it was amazing none-the-less. We basically chose some of our favourite local musicians that we've met from other radio/council events and rounded them up into one day of sitting on Jubilee Green, drinking prosecco, eating one too many scones, and getting patriotic (I think I managed the latter pretty well, don't you?). It was a bit of an experiment as the carnival was a bit over-done, but we had multiple people ask for us to do the same next year so our gamble definitely paid off!

SS Great Britain Bristol Rooftop View

This month we got to do something very special - the SS Great Britain has been a Bristolian institution ever since it returned to Bristol in the 70s, but of course it's a lot older than that. On 19th July the SS Great Britain turned 175 and the team invited us to a party to celebrate. You know sometimes when plans change last minute and work out for the better? I was meant to be in London that day but it got cancelled last minute, so I ended up wandering around town, got a load of work done and then got to sit on the deck watching the sunset over the pretty coloured houses (you can tell I'm proud of my photo - it's the cover photo for this post and is absolutely going to be on my Instagram soon!).

One of the most common parts of adulting that I've noticed is constantly messaging your friends saying "I'm free Monday, do you want to hang out?" and they're only free Tuesday, but the best plans are always spontaneous. On 23rd July I was having an errand running day, just got back and my friend Alicia text me asking to meet up. It was one of those times where you're really considering if you're glued to the sofa or not, but I forced myself out and ending up having a really lovely evening - we actually got kicked out of the pub at closing time, so you know it was a good evening.

This month wasn't all relaxing and community events - unfortunately when Mum and Dad were coming back from a weekend away a car pulled out on them and wrote off the Shogun. As I write this it's been about two weeks and Dad is STILL mourning the passing of his car. It seems a bit mad but I can almost understand it because we've done a lot in the time we had this car, but it's still a car. Fingers crossed we get a new car soon, because otherwise I might go mad!

mamma mia film review bristol vue cinema cribbs causeway

The last week of July was much more chilled out. I've definitely noticed the absence of BSR events this summer; we had to take less on due to a lack of volunteers, and I've been kind of struggling with what to do with all my free time, it's kind of weird! On the last weekend in July we had absolutely nothing to do, so we went to the cinema to see the new Mamma Mia film. I've got to be honest, it was good but it wasn't one of those films that you'd download and watch repeatedly. If you've seen the first film then I'd recommend going just to find out what happens, but it's definitely missable.

That's it for this month in pictures - I definitely have had a lot of free time without BSR events. I've never noticed before but PR activities really wind down in summer and without community events I'm left wondering what to do with all my time, and so far August has been event quieter!!

What have you been up to this month?
