5 Must See European Destinations to Visit This Summer

Toulon Beach in Summer

European summer is just around the corner, parents are gearing up for sunny half term breaks, and with the long days and warm nights on the horizon, I've found myself looking ahead to sunny weekend city breaks or beach trips.

Having just had to cancel our cruise this year, I've got absolutely nothing booked and a bit of "blank page" syndrome. There are so many places I would love to re-visit from previous cruises, because one day in port just isn't enough! At the same time, it's a big world out there with lots to explore! If you're in the same boat and looking to book some summer trips, allow me to share a few of my all time favourite destinations to inspire you.

Helsinki, Finland

This little city doesn't have a huge amount of "things to do" but it's a beautiful place to spend a sunny weekend. Take a boat trip, visit some of the historic buildings and museums, explore the beautiful streets and try some local food at the market. Take a day trip along the coast to find the pretty towns of Porvoo and Fiskars for a completely different slice of Finnish life

A view of Tallinn Old Town from a view point above the city

Tallinn, Estonia

Just across the Gulf of Finland lies another beautiful Baltic capital - Tallinn. The Estonian capital is a perfect blend of old and new, with historic buildings nestled amongst modern glass office blocks. Walk up through the old town to find one of the most iconic views of the city - or see the sights from the 300m+ high TV tower if you're feeling really brave. Tallinn is a beautiful city with so much to do that I've been there twice and still feel like I've not even scratched the surface!

Nyhavn in Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is an incredible city with so much to explore. Whether you're a foodie, a lover of history or like to hit the tourist highlights, it's a great place to spend a long weekend. It's also a short trip over Øresund Bridge to Malmö if you fancy a day trip to Sweden!

Lisbon, Portugal

If you want to visit somewhere NOT in the Baltic Sea this summer (I can't help it - Scandinavia is still one of my favourite cruise itineraries ever!), then Lisbon should absolutely be on your list for a summer city break this year. Lisbon is a beautiful capital city, full of history, delicious food, incredible views and so much to see and do, both in the city and in the surrounding areas (check out Belem and Cascais). I've got a full guide on what to do in Lisbon if you're interested.

Stornoway Harbour on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland

Scotland

I know the UK has a reputation for always being rainy, but summers here are actually beautiful (and still sometimes rainy...). We visited the Isle of Lewis last summer and it was BEAUTIFUL. It was a very sleepy town in the Outer Hebrides - there honestly wasn't much to do other than walk and explore nature, but I loved it. Ever since then, Scotland has been firmly on my bucket list. I really want to explore Edinburgh, but I would also love to spend a week taking ferries between the islands and exploring more of what the Outer Hebrides has to offer.
