Creating My Bespoke Fragrance: Review

Hey Owlets,

These days it’s rare I bring you a straight review of a product, but when I find something I think is really cool I just have to share. I don’t know what’s happened but over the last few years I’ve gone from never wearing perfume or getting something *interesting* in a bright blue Avon bottle, to having different scents for different occasions, keeping an eye on new releases and loving trying new scents. I’ve written a whole post about my favourite spring scents, and I’ve gotten close to “the one” fragrance, but it’s never been perfect - so why not mix my own?

The Perfume Studio recently launched a new product called “The Bespoke Collection” which allows you to design your own fragrance and surprisingly at £49 it’s on par, if not slightly less, than most mid-range perfumes. The kit comes with 6 9ml bottles of blends which you can choose yourself, 6 pippets, 6 scent strips and a 30ml perfume bottle.

One of the things I found most difficult was choosing my blends - I think it took me days! To be presented with a list of notes and no guidance is very daunting, even when you were buying for yourself. For inspiration, I decided to look at what’s in the perfumes that are already firm favourites - I found a site called “Fragrantica” which I highly recommend as it was really helpful.

Having chosen blends that appeared in my favourite perfumes, the box turned up a few days later, beautifully presented in a cream box, with “The Owlet” engraved on the bottle. For only £5 extra I would get it engraved whether it was for myself or someone else, as it’s something that makes me smile and reminds me that it’s my own personal scent.

The instructions were really easy to follow and I still somehow messed it up, but that’s my fault - not theirs! You need to write the numbers of the blends on the scent strips but a word of caution - the pointy end is where you should write it (I know, it’s obvious to me now as well!). You then dip one strip in each pot and waft them together in different combinations until you find what you like. One tip I have is to not mix straight away. I only did this by chance because I had to go out, but when I came back the scent had completely changed and I loved it more. It also helped to take a break and come back to it. In the booklet it suggests smelling coffee beans in between to neutralise your nose - I’m not quite posh enough to have coffee beans lying around the house and I’m not sure instant coffee worked, but I felt like I knew what I was doing.

Once you’ve chosen what you want to put into your fragrance, make sure you WRITE IT DOWN. I can’t say this enough times as now the only way I know what I put in is by looking at how empty the bottles are. By writing it down you can reorder a refill of your perfume which will arrive pre-mixed, and costs less than re-ordering the kit.

Mixing the fragrance was the only time that I felt a little restricted by what I had received in the kit. As I previously mentioned, leaving the fragrance strips for a while changed the scent, so as I was mixing I didn’t like it as much as what I was smelling on the scent strips. Because of this I ended up adding little bits as I went along, and having a few extra scent strips to dip in the perfume as I was mixing would’ve been really helpful. The other issue is that in the booklet it tells you how much of each blend to add, according to how many blends you’re using. I chose three blends - 1, 4 and 11. According to the instruction booklet you need to add 10ml of each blend to the bottle, but they only give you 9ml of each scent so you end up with a bottle that’s only 3/4 full. I ended up adding a few extra bits in as I was mixing but my bottle still isn’t full as I would expect.

Overall I really enjoyed the novelty of making my own fragrance. Being able to choose your blends and how you mix them makes the fragrance really special, as does the personalisation on the bottle. Did I create “the one” perfume? Not even close. Has it knocked my favourite perfume off the top spot? Not quite. But I did enjoy the process and I have a perfume that I would wear if it saved me walking up the stairs to get another.

Not a complete success but maybe I’m just too fussy! If I was going to do this again I would pay more attention to the information about the blends and pick things that I liked the sound of, rather than what’s in other perfumes that I liked. But if you want to try something different, have a fun afternoon and create something that’s truly unique to you then I would definitely recommend it. I have to admit, I did feel a little like a mad scientist! If you'd like to make your own scent, the set is available to buy direct from The Perfume Studio's website.

What do you think? Would you try this?
